Justin Wehr’s authoritative conclusions on popular music these days

In short: I think hit music right now is probably better than at any time in the past two decades (which isn’t necessarily saying much). The electronica and R & B influences mix together in a non-boring and very pleasant way. If I were bigger on lyrics, I might come to a very different conclusion because, generally speaking, the intellectual depth consists of raising glasses and rocking clubs.

Songs I like, in no order:

  • Rihanna - what’s my name; only girl (in the world)
  • Black Eyed Peas - just can’t get enough
  • Bruno Mars - talking to the moon; grenade
  • Cee Lo Green - forget (fuck) you
  • Britney Spears - till the world ends (yes, seriously)
  • Usher - dj got us fallin’ in love again

Songs that make me want to pull my ears off:

  • Lady Gaga - you and I
  • Maroon 5 & Christina Aguilera - move like jagger
  • pretty much everything by Ke$ha

Coming into this, I expected that Adelle and Lady Gaga would be the only ones I might find interesting, but neither have done anything for me. I expected to despise Katy Perry but I don’t, at all. But I still hate Nickelback.
